Back to the Tower

This page contains an archive of items that once were news, but no longer are! Hopefully, this will keep the Tower Home Page from cluttering too much.

22 September 2004 Take back the web! You might have heard of Firefox, an open-source web browser that is experiencing incredible growth. It has many advantages over Internet Explorer, as you can see here , but if I had to pick the most important one, it would be this: it lets you take back the web. Firefox, being open-source, puts the interests of its users first, and doesn't care about anyones' bottom line. Get it here:

28 February. Regrettably, Claude Shannon has passed away, at 84 years of age. Bell Labs has published an obituary here. Shannon is one of the few men whose impact has changed the world, by turning communications from an art to a science. He showed what the limits of human communication are, but he didn't showed us how to achieve them, giving thousands of engineers and scientists something to apply their minds to.

In the words of Dr. Manuel Guzman, he was "a giant". In the words of the International Herald Tribune, his contributions are "monumental".
